3.48.2   अभावः कतिविधः

अभावश्चतुर्विधः प्रागभावः प्रध्वंसाभावः अत्यन्ताभावः अन्योन्याभावश्चेति।

  • अनादिः सान्तः प्रागभावः। उत्पत्तेः पूर्वं कार्यस्य।
  • सादिरनन्तः प्रध्वंसः। उत्पत्यनन्तरं कार्यस्य।
  • त्रैकालिकसंसर्गावच्छिन्नप्रतियोगिताकोऽत्यन्ताभावः। यथा भूतले घटो नास्तीति।
  • तादात्म्यसम्बन्धावच्छिन्नप्रतियोगिताकोऽन्योन्याभावः। यथा घटः पटो नेति।
how many kinds of abhāva are there

Non-existence is of four kinds –

  1. pragabhāva where non-existence ends when something is created
  2. pradhvamsābhāva where non-existence starts when something is destroyed
  3. atantābhāva where something never exists at any time and
  4. anyonyābhāva where two things don’t coexist.
