7.2: सत्त्वांशात् तत्त्वोत्पत्तिः

एतेषां पञ्चतत्त्वानां मध्य आकाशादीनां क्रमेण सात्विकांशात् श्रोत्रत्वच्चक्षूरसनाघ्राणमिति ज्ञानेन्द्रियाणि संभूतानि।

एतेषां पञ्चतत्त्वानां समष्टिसात्विकांशादन्तःकरणं संभूतम्। तच्च वृत्तिभेदाद्मनोबुद्ध्यहङ्कारचित्तानीति चतुर्धा। सङ्कल्पविकल्पात्मकं मनः। निश्चयात्मिका बुद्धिः। अहंकर्ता अहंकारः। चिन्तनकर्तृ चित्तम्॥

मनसो देवता चन्द्रमाः। बुद्धेर्ब्रह्मा। अहंकारस्य रुद्रः। चित्तस्य वासुदेवः॥
From sattva

From the sattva portion of the five tattvas the five jñānendriyas – śrotra (hearing), tvak (touch), cakṣu (sight), rasanā (taste) and ghrāṇa (smell) arise in order from ākāśa etc.

From the combined sattva portion of all the five tattvas, the antaḥkaraṇa arises. Due to vr̥tti-bheda (functional differences), it is divided into manas, buddhi, ahaṅkāra and citta.

The function of the manas is saṅkalpa and vikalpa. The function of the buddhi is niścaya. The function of the ahaṅkāra is doership. The function of the citta is memory.

  • The devatā of the manas is candramā
  • The devatā of the buddhi is brahmā
  • The devatā of the ahaṅkāra is rudra
  • The devatā of the citta is vāsudeva
